The life cycle of a wasp

The fertile female comes out of hibernation during the early days of summer. She (the queen) then looks for suitable mates.

She could mate with several males and store their sperm in her body. During mating, she is already fertile but her eggs don’t immediately interact with the sperm. The queen then builds a nest which would become a colony. The eggs are stored separately in a small sack which during that time has been injected with sperm. At first, the queen will just hatch enough workers to support her in growing the colony.

With enough workers, she will just concentrate on giving birth. Workers will assist her in giving birth, taking care of the fertilized eggs as well as guarding the colony.

As the colony increases in size, females will then start to become smaller queens, looking for males that would deposit sperm to them. By the time the new breed of queens could lay eggs, the main queen has already reached her limit in life span and dies.

Bee sting

Can wasps cause harm?

Wasps sting as a defence by injecting venom into your skin. A sting often causes a swollen, red mark to form on the skin. This can be itchy and painful, but is harmless in most cases. The affected area will usually remain painful and itchy for a few days.

Some people have an allergic reaction after a sting. This can cause symptoms that vary in severity, from pain and swelling to a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that will require immediate medical attention (anaphylaxis). You should seek emergency treatment if you have any of the following symptoms immediately after being stung

  • swelling or itching anywhere else on your body
  • a skin reaction anywhere else, particularly pale or flushed (red or blotchy) skin
  • wheezing or difficulty breathing
  • a headache
  • nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea
  • a fast heart rate
  • dizziness or feeling faint
  • difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  • confusion, anxiety or agitation

Call 999 and ask for an ambulance, because this type of reaction can be fatal.
